If This Doesn't Break Your Heart...
I don't know what will! When Brooks and I were out looking for land last week, we came to a road way out in the country that looked appealing. So, we started down it and all the sudden there was a shallow overpass and there were three white animal figures off in the distance. Brooks, who has contacts, said "look there's a sheep with two dogs". Sure enough, as we got closer I saw one of the cutest sights I've ever seen...two Great Pyrenees protecting a baby sheep! It was heart-breaking. Me being a dog lover and an animal lover in general, I wanted to take all three home with me! Brooks assured me that this little fellow had just gotten a little lost from his home and that the dogs would help protect him and take him back home. After all, this is exactly what the Great Pyrenees breed is born to do. Luckily, though, I had my camera :-)

Freedom Weekend Aloft 2010
Holla... :-)
On the swinging bridge
( Mel, Lacy, Meredith, Melissa & I)

Mel & I
Hazel, Me, Mel, Melissa & Meredith

Hazel & her FINANCE, Jarrett
Joey & Rory

Melanie & Kyle
Luke Bryan :-)
Melissa & Meredith enjoying hearing the voice of Luke...Live!

This little girl made some dancing friends!

Celebrating Freedom Weekend Aloft in SC was a great way to start the Memorial Day weekend...especially since I had an awful tummy bug for the better part of the week and was all cooped up. Since I was feeling much better on Saturday morning, I decided I'd head to Greenville with the girls (Mel, Meredith, Lacy & Melissa) to grab lunch and shop before heading to Simpsonville to take part in all the Freedom Weekend Aloft festivities (namely, the Luke Bryan & Joey & Rory concerts). The last time I was in downtown Greenville it was night time and Brooks and I had dinner and danced at the Wild Wing Cafe. I have to say that experiencing the city in the daytime is much better. It is truly a beautiful city with many neat dining establishments . Great shopping opportunities abound whether you are looking for a gift, a treat for yourself, or a treat for your pet, it's all in downtown Greenville. The entire city is dog/pet friendly and a good many of the little shops have water bowls sitting outside the door for your pets. Many of the restaurants boast signs that read "pet friendly". In my opinion, Greenville is an amazing place. It even has it's own park with waterfalls and a swinging bridge!

After a fun-filled afternoon of shopping, eating, and strolling in the park, we headed to Freedom Weekend Aloft. When we first got there, there were threats of storms in the area, so they were not admitting and were sending people back to their cars. Well, there was only one problem. We didn't have a car. That's right. Lacy had dropped us off b/c she wasn't planning on staying for the concerts. So, we all just looked at each other and told the attendant we didn't have a car to go back to and she replied, "well, would you like a notepad?" Om, someone please explain to me how a notepad helps in this situation! Too funny! Luckily, we did have a few rain jackets and some umbrellas; So, we just pitched a palate on the ground near a treeline and then it began to sprinkle. Just great, here we are bedded down like dear and there's a thunderstorm looming. GREAT! Needless to say, the possibly of us seeing Luke Bryan was looking pretty slim since this IS an outdoor amphitheatre. Sometime within the next hour, Brooks & Kyle arrived as did Hazel & Jarrett. By that time, the attendants were letting folks in and we were stoked! Although it was sprinkling off and on and the hot air balloons didn't fly, we still got to hear (and meet) Joey & Rory and Luke Bryan. So much fun!

Meet, Dixie
Sweet, Dixie
(with our new puppies, Dixie & Flo)
Dixie & Flo just kickin' it
she wasn't really a fan of dry dog food with milk on top
At first, Dally would just glare at Dixie
Dixie loves to go for rides in the truck!
When Brooks came home one afternoon about three weeks ago and asked "Do you want to go look at a puppy with me?", I replied, "Sure". That's how we ended up with our new puppy, Dixie (we also picked out a puppy for our friends, Kyle and Melanie). She's a mix between a Blue Healer and an Australian Shepard and she has the innate ability to round-up about anything (e.g. our Golden Retriever, Dally and the chickens in the yard) but mostly she's meant to be a cow dog. Ever since Brooks has owned cattle, I've listened to him go on and on about how he wants a cow dog and now he's got the sweetest little cow dog around. Altogether we rent about 50 acres where we keep most of our cattle. Brooks goes to check the cows everyday RELIGIOUSLY whether they need to be checked or not!!! Now, little Dixie goes wherever he goes which reminds me of one of my favorite childhood nursery rhymes called Mary and the Little Lamb. Dixie has took off chasing after the cows on a few occasions now. This is hilarious to me b/c she's such a petite little thing and I wonder what she thinks she's actually going to do once she catches those cows! LOL
Let's Celebrate Mom!
Mother & Son
(are they not PRECIOUS?)
Our cousin, sweet baby Drew
That's just what we did this past mother's day weekend...as we do each year, I suppose. Only this year, we celebrated with Nanny, her children and grandchildren. We had a blast seeing everyone, playing kickball, picking honeysuckles, and playing cards (with Marti). Too fun!
Brooks and I are so proud to have our moms in our lives. God has blessed both of us with kind, nurturing & selfless mothers. We count our blessings for the two of you and we love the both of you very, very much!

Ahh...Just What the Doctor Ordered...
A pedicure! It seems almost silly for me to be blogging on a subject such as this, I know! However, in my defense, the last time I had a pedi was right before my wedding four years ago. It's been so long b/c I refuse to spend $ on things such as this...and since I got a free visit for a pedi at new teacher orientation, I figured I better take them up on the offer. To make it even better, I got to share my pedi experience with one of my best gal pals, Britt. Afterwards, we did some shopping and then some eating at the Mexican restaurant in town. What a good way to end a stressful week! So, call it silly if you will...but it's the little things in life that I appreciate and look forward to.

As The Old Adage Goes...
If you don't use it, you'll lose it! And it seems I've lost it! When it comes to tennis, that is! I played my first tournament in like FOREVER and it didn't go THAT well. I played with one of my FBLA students, Lorena, who I am super proud to know and to have the privilege to play tennis with from time to time. She and I just entered to have fun and that we did! We lost 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Boo! Oh well. I have grown to like doubles but singles is more my cup of tea. I feel that singles is where I really make my mark. So, it is my goal to play more of the sport I love so dearly and to "get back into the swing of things" so to speak.

Sticks & Stones
(Although the following blurb is about two pages in length, it is about a personal struggle of mine and it is my wish that all of you will read it and after reading it, hopefully you will look at how you treat others in a whole new light)
The Question I Ask Myself…
How can the actions (sticks & stones) of others upset me so much? After pondering this for some time now, I’ve set out for an answer and this is what I’ve come to realize with the help of the book titled, Sticks & Stones Exposed along with the help of my lifeline, the Bible.
Even Golden Rule Gurus Need Help…
If you are one of those people who try to live your life by the age old, “Golden Rule” and you feel your pretty good at doing so, chances are that somewhere along the way, you were hurt by the words or actions of others and wanted to do something about it. Otherwise, why would the “Golden Rule” be so important to you? Don’t we all want to be treated with kindness and thus, we set out to treat others with kindness? I’ll put it this way…if anyone has ever said something that hurt your feelings, not said something that hurt your feelings, done something that hurt your feelings, or not done something that hurt your feelings, it is quite possible they did not even realize it (or, maybe they did!). In turn, you could have done the very same thing to someone else without even realizing it (or, maybe you did realize it!).
To put it more plainly, actions and words can be “sticks and stones” and can act as omissions: They can be the things you DON’T do, you FORGET to do, or you simply don’t think are IMPORTANT. So, step out of your comfort zone and look at how you treat others. When you find that answer, you may realize why people treat you the way they do.
Food for Thought…
If you had 28, 16 year-old students in your classroom who all recently took their driving test and you asked 27 of those students how they did on the test, how do you think the one student you didn’t ask would feel? If you have any heart or empathy for other people, you would realize that you excluded that one student and probably made he or she feel very hurt.
To my Family, Friends, Acquaintances, and Those in Between…
Since I’ve recently (and not so recently) had my feelings hurt, I really want to make the effort to let all of my friends & family know that if I have ever said (or not said) anything that hurt your feelings, done anything that hurt your feelings, or better yet, made you feel like you were not a part of something, I am sorry and probably didn’t even realize it. Also, let’s talk about it b/c our relationship is more important than “sticks & stones” or even pride.
Although I am not perfect and never have claimed to be, I still believe that God has always given me a kind heart and a loving personality towards people in general. I do not have a mean bone in my body; however, it is very difficult for me to continue to be kind to those who are not kind to me. I know that as a Christian I am called to “turn the other cheek” but after being stepped on and hurt by those who have no justifiable reason to treat me the way they do, I refuse to keep turning the other cheek…be it so called friends, family, acquaintances or those in between.
You Know it’s Funny…
I had a guest come and speak to my classes yesterday and her speech was titled “How to have a successful life”. One statement she made really stuck with me. It went like this, “In life, there are people who are ‘users’. These are the people who use other people to get what they want, be it a higher social status, a higher salary, or a different position at their workplace (etc.) and they often do not think of other people (except for the people who they feel they need to impress or who will help them advance). These people, as my guest speaker put it, do not deserve to get to know us for the great person we are on the inside because they can not see past the outside or what other people have told them about us. Shame on them! I agree with her 100 % and could not have put it better myself! I am a grown woman and it is time that I stand up for myself! And, you know what? Sometimes it takes more of a woman or man to stand up to people than is does to coward down and let people treat you like dirt by bossing you around, ignoring you, or being two-faced towards you. Isn’t it easier to sit back and let others treat you this way? Yes, but it takes a strong woman/man to stand up and say enough is enough! Today, that is exactly what I am saying. End of story. I am done with fake “hellos” and hugs and “how are you’s”…especially when these people can only speak to me long enough to boss me around and then ignore me when there are more important people around. I deserve better! It’s funny to me how my guest speaker came and spoke and reinforced the truth I already knew during a week when I needed to hear it the most. You know, it’s funny how God works.
To my TRUE Friends & Family…
Thank you to my true friends and family who take the time to get to know me, support me, spend time with me, and “include” me. I appreciate your genuine friendship and only hope that I am as good of a friend to you as you are to me. God really has blessed me by putting you in my life. Love you!
A Favorite Saying of Mine…
“Friendships/Relationships are only worth saving if the person “at fault” is willing to set their pride aside and change for the better. After all, friendship and all relationships in life are two-way streets.” It will never work when there is only one person doing the work.
One Final Thought…Matthew 7:1-5
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? Let me take the speck out of your eye, when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

~Food & Friends~
Sisters
Charmin, helping Mel organize the gifts
Becca, helping with a game
Ok, so I've had this typed up for quite some time now, but somehow I am posting it after I've posted the wedding...haha! Life must be busier than I thought! I will post date this after you ladies have had a chance to read it.
I wanted to do something special for Melanie's upcoming wedding so I got my EC tennis girlfriends (Chrissy, Becca, Charmin, & Hazel) together to throw a shower themed Food & Friends. It's no secret how much us girls love food and after talking to Melanie we decided a shower themed around food would be perfect for all of us. Guests brought recipes, ingredients, and even dishes. Melanie is now ready to practice those cooking skills without having to make a trip to the store first! I want to give a "shout out" to all of you wonderful ladies for helping me piece together a wonderful shower for Melanie. I love you gals!
